Learning Outcomes, ENC 1101

Outcomes are the measurable skills around which our assignments are built. After completing a major project, students will be assessed on how well they achieve these skills.


 
Project 1: Writing from Personal Experience

Project 1 will teach students to:
  • employ the use of the first person point of view,establish an effective organization for the essay,
  • create coherent and purposeful paragraphs (with topic sentences, details, support, concluding sentences, etc.),
  • effectively use transitional language and segues to demonstrate logical connections between ideas, and
  • construct a coherent paper with paragraphs that support the thesis statement/purpose.
Project 2: Brief Bibliographic Essay

Project 2 will teach students to:
  • students will learn to do choose credible and relevant sources,
  • concisely summarize an author’s main idea and support,
  • demonstrate an understanding of the larger conversation about their topic,
  • understand history as an ongoing conversation,
  • employ the use of the third person point of view
  • construct a coherent essay that effectively integrates sources, and
  • cite sources using MLA conventions
Project 3: Reflecting on Original Research

Project 3 will teach students to:
  • demonstrate thoughtful consideration of audience and purpose,     
  • identify the ways in which a medium or genre affects audience,  purpose, use of imagery and sources
  • effectively integrate research into a reflection essay,
  • employ the use of the first person point of view, and 
  • employ purposeful, clear, and concise style in writing.
Project 4: Joining a Scholarly Conversation

Project 4 will teach students to:
  • determine the appropriate point of view for the paper based on audience and purpose, medium and genre,
  • construct and revise an arguable and insightful thesis,
  • make connections between claims and source material,
  • construct an engaging introduction and conclusion,
  • employ segues and transitions that move the reader through the paper,
  • employ the use of the third person point of view
  • demonstrate skills gained from the first three projects as it relates to  focus and organization (Project 1), evidence and format (Project 2), and style (Project 3), and 
  • cite sources using MLA conventions.
