Informal Writing

Instructor Link Button

The USF Writing Program believes we can help students improve their writing abilities by requiring regular, informal writing. In other words, we think writers need a place to be creative, a place where play can happen with language. Consequently, over the course of ENC 1102, you are required to compose:

  • Two 250 word entries each week that respond to an assigned text or topic. Entries should help you compose your project papers because you will be instructed to comment on your writing process, experiment with different rhetorical devices, respond to pertinent readings, or explore relevant social events. You are encouraged to go “above and beyond” by composing entries that include non-traditional responses with new media. For instance, you may compose an entry with links to outside sources, pictures or attachments.  You are also welcome to submit a video response or a podcast that requires a greater rhetorical investment.

AND:

  • One significant response each week to the entries of fellow classmates. Your response should be meaningful and involve critical thinking. Do not just reply with surface- level comments such as: "Cool e post;" "Awesome project proposal;" or "I totally disagree with your response."
Note: it is up to your teacher's discretion where you publish your informal writing.
